How Pre-Core Training Prepares Therapists for ISTDP Core Training
Core Training is a sustained course of learning. Pre-Core cannot replace that longer process, but it can give therapists a useful clinical map, an initial experience of ISTDP’s active and experiential learning style, and a clearer basis for deciding whether Core Training is the right next step.
A three-day ISTDP Pre-Core Training provides a focused introduction to foundational principles and skills. Rather than trying to compress Core Training into a weekend, it helps clinicians begin learning the framework, identify areas they want to develop, and make a more informed decision about further study.
What ISTDP Core Training Involves
Core Training is designed for learning that develops over time. IEDTA-certified Core Training programs meet for a minimum of three times per year for three years, although individual programs vary in schedule, structure, and emphasis.
That longer time frame matters. Therapists need repeated opportunities to study clinical material, integrate feedback, examine their own responses, and apply the model in actual practice. Pre-Core offers a beginning foundation for that work, not a shortcut around it.
Five Ways Pre-Core Builds a Foundation for Core Training
1. A Shared Map for Feelings, Anxiety, and Defenses
The Triangle of Conflict helps clinicians consider the relationship among underlying feelings, anxiety, and defenses. The Triangle of Persons helps organize patterns that may appear in current relationships, earlier relationships, and the therapeutic relationship.
Pre-Core introduces both triangles as working clinical maps. Becoming familiar with them before Core Training can make later learning easier to organize because participants already have an initial framework for understanding what they observe.
2. A Clearer Therapeutic Focus and Alliance
An effective therapeutic focus helps therapist and patient develop clarity about the problem they are working on together. The therapeutic alliance supports collaboration around that work.
Pre-Core introduces ways to focus treatment around the patient’s conscious therapeutic goals and mobilize the patient’s motivation to engage in meaningful change. This gives therapists a practical starting point for understanding how inquiry, focus, and collaboration shape the treatment process.
3. Moment-to-Moment Assessment
ISTDP asks therapists to pay careful attention to defenses and anxiety as the work unfolds. Defenses can interfere with emotional contact, while anxiety needs to be observed and assessed in relation to the patient’s capacity.
Pre-Core considers these processes alongside the alliance and the invitation to experience underlying feelings. The goal is not to memorize a collection of interventions, but to begin formulating shorter, clearer, and more clinically purposeful responses to what is happening in the room.
4. Learning Through Video, Exercises, and Role-Play
The training uses focused teaching, clinical video, structured exercises, role-play, and supportive feedback. These methods allow participants to move between conceptual understanding and moment-to-moment clinical thinking.
This active learning format also gives therapists a realistic taste of the effort involved in learning an experiential model. They can notice what feels intuitive, where they become uncertain, and which skills they would want to develop through sustained training.
5. Observing the Therapist’s Side of the Process
Learning ISTDP involves more than observing the patient. Therapists are also invited to notice how their own anxiety, feelings, uncertainty, and habitual responses influence the work.
Pre-Core creates an early opportunity for that kind of self-observation within a direct and supportive learning environment. This can help participants identify personal learning edges before entering a longer course of training.
What Pre-Core Does—and Does Not—Do
It introduces a coherent framework for therapeutic focus, alliance, feelings, anxiety, and defenses.
It offers structured practice and feedback in a small, live learning environment.
It helps clinicians assess their interest, fit, and priorities for further ISTDP study.
It does not certify someone to practice ISTDP.
It does not guarantee admission to a Core Training program.
It does not replace longer-term Core Training, clinical supervision, or repeated practice.
Pre-Core should not be described as a universal prerequisite. Different teachers and programs may have their own admission processes and expectations. Its value is preparatory: clinicians can encounter the model in an organized way and make a more grounded decision about what they want next.

Signs Core Training May Be the Right Next Step
After an introductory experience, Core Training may be worth considering if you want sustained practice rather than a one-time exposure; are open to close study of clinical process and feedback; want to examine both patient responses and your own participation in the work; and can make the time, financial, and professional commitment required by a longer program.
You do not need to leave Pre-Core feeling certain or polished. More useful signs may be curiosity, a willingness to keep learning, and clearer questions about how you want to grow as a therapist.
Who May Find Pre-Core Useful?
David’s Pre-Core Training is designed for licensed and license-eligible mental health professionals. Previous ISTDP experience is welcome but not required.
